My clients often tell me they feel burned out because they work too much. I'm not convinced that's the real reason. I've met people who worked ten or twelve-hour days for years and still felt deeply alive. They were tired, of course, but there was something underneath the tiredness that kept carrying them forward. Their work still meant something. They still felt connected to the people around them. They could still become curious about the future.
And then I've met entrepreneurs who work half as much, take regular holidays, have a successful business and a wonderful family... A man like this, a highly successful entrepreneur, who I knew since my childhood, couple of years ago they came over ti visit us. During the visit I’ve noticed ”I just don't feel that passion since ages.” — That sentence has stayed with me for years. I didn’t understand the fadeness in his voice.
After years of studying and experiencing life and entrepreneurship a littlest I came to my conclusion about this memory:
I think we've misunderstood burnout.
We treat it as an energy problem. We talk about sleep, workload, boundaries, time management, longevity, exercising, and so on… Those things matter. I'm certainly not arguing against them.
But they don't explain why someone can return from a two-week holiday and feel exactly the same three days later. Or why a business owner can reach every financial goal they ever dreamed of, only to discover that the excitement lasted about twenty-four hours before life became strangely flat again. Something deeper is happening here.
